How does it work?
One of the first pieces of building a coaching relationship with a parent is to find out what’s important to that parent or couple; what values and goals ground them. Then we can work on whatever specific issues are worrying them, keeping their values in mind at all times.
Usually parents seek out a coach when there is a specific situation causing a problem. Once they work on solving that problem, the parent will know whether it was an isolated issue or whether there’s a larger parenting issue underneath they’d like to work on with a coach.
Parent coaching is a partnership between me as the coach, and you as the parent. I help parents get to the point where they trust their own ability and approach parenting with confidence and joy.
Who needs coaching?
Parents who hire coaches recognize that they need impartial input – not just the loving concern of family and friends. They know they’re raising children in a fast-paced, media-infused world where parents work more, family members live further away, and their children's friends sometimes have too much freedom.
The parents I’ve worked with are good, caring parents. Sometimes they’re overwhelmed by some aspect of parenting. Sometimes they’re being pulled in too many directions at once by work, marriage, parenting, volunteering, and community responsibilities. Still other times parents are in a situation that demands special skills, like moving to a new city, parenting children through & after divorce, single parenting, bullying, etc.
It’s easy to get to a place where the kids, their demands and their schedules are running the show, and where we as parents lose the sense that we are in charge of the family. Kids may think they want to be in charge, but not having parents there to set rules, create structure and offer support can leave a child feeling very unprotected and vulnerable in the world.
If you're worried about being a good parent, then you’re on the road to being a great parent. My job is to you take the values and the skills you have now and build on these to help you parent the way you truly want.
